GWU THURSTON HALL RENOVATION

Status: In-Design

Project Team: VMDO, O’Shea + Wilson Siteworks, CMTA Engineers

Budget: $85M

Client: George Washington University

Involvement: SD-CD

Thurston Hall project aims to revitalize one of the countries densest student halls. “Spark, Energize, Develop and Belong” are the main principles which drove the projects design. The courtyard was opened to student activity by taking a mass out off buildings south wing, bringing daylight and fresh air while view terraces step down towards the new courtyard garden. Protruding view boxes “lanterns” provide cross-views through the building and in between exterior and interior common spaces. A transparent canopy protects the users from natural elements, providing a comfortable environment year-round. Personal efforts focus on mostly interiors including plans, sections, reflected ceiling plans and interior details, elevations with some construction site experience.
